Contemporary with the arrival of the Whitby to Pickering Railway and the establishment of the Whitby Iron Company in Beckhole, in the mid 19th century, the landlords, Ralph and Mary Dowson added a second floor to the original cottages, and added a three story extension to the building, originally used as a shop with tenements above for industrial workers.
In the forties, his interest in Marxism heightened; and in 1952 he presented in a remarkable piece, his introduction to a reprint of volume II of Elliot and Dowson's The History of India, as Told by Its Own Historians, an interpretation of early medieval India deeply influenced by Marxist ideas.
This idea was first applied to the petroglyphs on the Neolithic monuments of the British Isles by David Lewis-Williams and T. Dowson.
However, in August 2010, following Eddy Butler's unsuccessful leadership challenge, Edmonds was sacked from the Advisory Council due both to his open criticism of Griffin's fundraiser, Jim Dowson, and to his support for the leadership bid of Eddy Butler.
