In 1994, Hicks met DJ Dougal at a Dreamscape event, which led to the creation of their own label Essential Platinum.
He has won awards at various film festivals for his films The Stepfather, True Believer and Dreamscape.
As a consequence of YouTube introducing a system called Audioswap (which replaces the audio of copyrighted soundtracks with something else), a number of songs from 009 Sound System, particularly "Dreamscape" and "Trinity", became widely prominent on many YouTube videos; some YouTubers have declared one or the other song as the unofficial "national anthem" for YouTube.
One critic has cited Marius Lyle, along with Edouard Roditi, Charles Henri Ford and Harry Crosby, as a representative writer of the prose poem-dreamscape, which "displays a strong oratorical strain as well as a tendency to dwell on apocalyptic visions and various pyschopathological states.
During the early 1990s Grange completed two BBC commissions, Focus and Fade for the BBC Symphony Orchestra, who gave the premiere at the Royal Festival Hall in 1992 conducted by Andrew Davies, and Lowry Dreamscape, which was premiered at the 1993 BBC Festival of Brass by the Sun Life Brass Band conducted by Roy Newsome.
