The town is served by the original railway which connected China with Kazakhstan via Druzhba, Kazakhstan and Alashankou, China in the early 1990s.

The 2005 UEFA Futsal Cup Final was played on April 23, 2005 at the Spiroudôme in Charleroi, Belgium and April 30, 2005 at the Sport Hall "Druzhba" in Moskva, Russia.
There have been proposals to extend northern branch of the Druzhba pipeline to the German North Sea port of Wilhelmshaven, which would reduce oil tanker traffic in the Baltic Sea and make it easier to transport Russian oil to the United States.
