The wetlands form a fauna and flora haven with one of the southern most mangrove habitats in the world, extensive reed and samphire beds and a large bird and fish population.
Genesee and Wyoming Australia operate the 'Stonie' along the suburban tracks from Penrice in the Barossa Valley and grain trains from Roseworthy to the Rosewater Loop (Dry Creek-Port Adelaide line), however no freight trains have been seen along the route to Roseworthy since 2007.
The station was right next to the Eric Sutton Oval, and was located about 7 km from Dry Creek station on the Dry Creek to Port Adelaide line.
Both were withdrawn in 1979 with 350 sold to SteamRanger and 351 to a preservation group at Moonta for a proposed heritage railway operation but the venture did not continue and the Australian Railway Historical Society purchased the unit and restored the locomotive to operating condition at Dry Creek depot.
The expressway is the southern part of a north-south freeway originally conceptualised under the Metropolitan Adelaide Transport Study (MATS), completed in 1965, as a freeway bypassing the city from Dry Creek to Old Noarlunga.
