In 1984 the Dublin suburban lines over which they worked were electrified and new electric multiple units operated the renamed Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART) system.
Prior to the start of the electrified DART service in 1984, the line was previously operated by CIÉ 2600 Class diesel railcars dating from the early 1950s, which had been converted in the early 1970s to push-pull operation with a CIE 201 Class diesel locomotive at one end of the train and a driving trailer carriage at the other.
Similar plans for a DART network extension proposed an underground stop at St Stephen's Green.
Built in the 1960s, it is situated between Bayside Shopping Centre, the Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART) line and the coastal Dublin Road, with access from Bayside Boulevard, Bayside Park and one external link to the coast road.

Further up the street with an over bridge carrying the DART (en route to Tara Street across the Liffey) over the street to the North Strand Road heading towards Fairview.
However, unlike its DART and BART cousins in Dublin and San Francisco, this scheme is merely an increase in bus services in the Manningham area.
