Dunnichen in Angus was first identified as a possible location for the battle by antiquarian George Chalmers in the early 19th century.

The battle site has long been thought to have been near the present-day village of Dunnichen in Angus.
The Northumbrians were lured by a feigned flight in the mountains and Ecgfrith was then slain at the Battle of Nechtansmere, located at either Dunnichen in Angus or Dunachton in Badenoch.
The stone was initially erected at the unidentified "Kirkton Church", either in Dunnichen or in Letham, then it was moved to the garden of Dunnichen House.
