In 1577 Thomas Fowke, a London businessman and Merchant of the Staple, bought what was now described as the Manor of Dunston from Edward Stafford, 3rd Baron Stafford.

In the Middle Ages, Dunston was subject ecclesiastically to the large and important Collegiate Church of St. Michael at Penkridge, a royal peculiar whose dean was from 1215 the Archbishop of Dublin.
Pursglove resided in his last years partly at Tideswell and partly at Dunston.

The tower was designed by the Owen Luder Partnership on behalf of Whickham Council who at the time controlled the Dunston area of Gateshead.
The construction of the current Dunston Hall was begun 1859 on a the site of a much older hall which was an early 19th-century copy of Blickling Hall, although records show that there were two previous post medieval halls which stood slightly to the north and east on the site of the present Hall Farm.
