Originally founded in 1963 after a merger between two lesser teams in Mbare, Harare Township, Rhodesia, the side quickly became one of the strongest in the Rhodesian league, and by the recognition of the country's independence as Zimbabwe in 1980 had become the country's most successful team, having won six national titles.

The club has been based at Rufaro Stadium, Mbare, for most of its history but temporarily used the National Sports Stadium for a few years in the late 90s.
Before becoming a full-time crickeeter, Massakadza played football for Dynamos, one of Zimbabwe's most popular clubs.
During his club career, he played for Highlanders, SC Kriens, SR Delémont, FC Zürich, Moroka Swallows, Dynamos and Free State Stars, and was also a member of the Zimbabwe national team.
On 25 September, Gutu signed a two-year deal with Dynamos Harare.
Sam Dauya (October 22, 1937 – May 11, 2008) was the Zimbabwean founder of the Dynamos F.C. football team, which was founded in 1963 and is based in Harare.
