John Francis Filmer

During his period in Western Australia, Filmer, in collaboration with E. J. Underwood, achieved a major research success which was to prove of incalculable benefit to agriculture in New Zealand and throughout the world.

October 24 – Joseph R. Underwood, United States Senator from Kentucky from 1847 till 1853.

A century later, the tale of Mr. Underwood was brought to the public eye again as the subject of a 1974 song by musician Brian Eno, entitled "The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch," from his debut solo album Here Come the Warm Jets.

Lloyd, alongside that year nominee, Vice President Richard Nixon and Governor of West Virginia Cecil H. Underwood (who also ran only in his home state), were the only candidates to win primaries in 1960.
