Álvaro Gonçalves Pereira, Prior of Crato, was born to Gonçalo (Gonçalves) Pereira, 97th Archbishop of Braga (1326-1349) and Teresa Peres Vilarinho.
In addition, Pereira was a member of the advisory boards of Amgen and Sigma-Tau Pharmaceuticals along with several other organizations.
Pereira was educated at the University of Illinois and is brother of architect (and occasional film art director) William L. Pereira.
