Confirmation was no longer to be conferred at baptism (as in the Greek Orthodox church, from which the Greek Catholics were descended), and could now only be given by a bishop (not a priest, as in the Eastern churches).
The publication of the Apostolic letter Ea Semper, which dealt with the Eastern Rite Catholics in the United States, led to a number of defections to the Russian Orthodox Church in America.
