Since its restoration by the Cawdor family in 1855, its highbacked old pews have disappeared and its Norman windows have been replaced by those of later Gothic design.
Ownership of the castle passed to the Vaughan and Cawdor families, and from the 18th century it started to attract artists (Turner sketched the castle in 1798).
In 1797 the French Republican La Legion Noire landed off Carreg Wastad Point, in what would be the Last invasion of Britain, only to surrender to a much smaller force including the Pembroke Yeomanry hastily assembled under Lord Cawdor.
Built in the nearby open area, named Emlyn Square after GWR director Viscount Emlyn (later kown as John Campbell, 1st Earl Cawdor), was the Mechanics Institute, paid for via subscription by the workers.
