The New Zealand Rifle Brigade (Earl of Liverpool's Own) was formed in 1915, served with the New Zealand Division during the war and was disbanded in 1919.
Gifford was elected to the House of Commons for Eye in 1817, a seat he represented until 1824, and served under the Earl of Liverpool as Solicitor General between 1817 and 1819 and as Attorney General between 1819 and 1824.
In January 1826 he was appointed Joint Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (alongside Lord Howard de Walden) by the Earl of Liverpool, a post he held until August of the same year.
