Despite some difficulty raising the money required, the tower was opened by the Earl of Scarborough on 24 June 1899.
His second wife was Lady Mary Arabella Lumley, daughter of Richard, 4th Earl of Scarborough and Barbara, younger daughter and co-heiress of Sir George Savile, last Baronet of Rufford.
He received commissions from the Earl of Scarborough, and in Antwerp and Brussels.
