The square was developed by 4th Earl of Southampton, in the late 17th century, and was initially known as Southampton Square.

Earl of Winchester

In medieval times earldoms closely associated with counties, and the Earls of Winchester were sometimes referred to as Earls of Southampton (for Winchester is the county seat of Hampshire, which in those days was known as County Southampton or Southamptonshire).

St. Michael and All Angels Church, Bassett

After the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1540s, the manor was acquired by Thomas Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton.
