The vair pattern was from the arms of the Ferrers family, Earls of Derby.
During the Norman Conquest of England, a branch of the de Livet family followed the de Ferrers (later the Earls of Derby) to England, along with the Curzons (Notre-Dame-de-Courson) and the Baskervilles (Basqueville, now Bacqueville-en-Caux), who were also under-tenants of the old Ferrieres fiefdom in Normandy.
It came into the estates of the Earls of Derby through the marriage of Elizabeth Stanley (the daughter of Sir Thomas Stanley & Joan Gousell) & Thomas Strange in the early 15th century.
In 1212 the manor was held by Richard de Orrell but became divided and was acquired by the Hollands of Upholland and descended to the Lovels and subsequently to the Earls of Derby.
Hornby's sister Charlotte Margaret later married her cousin Edward Smith-Stanley, 13th Earl of Derby, and the close association between the Earls of Derby and the Hornby family would play a significant role in Phipps Hornby's career and politics.
