The 23rd Michigan Infantry was mustered into Federal service at East Saginaw, Michigan on September 13, 1862.
The 29th Michigan Infantry was mustered into Federal service at East Saginaw, Michigan on October 3, 1864.
In 1864, he moved with his parents to East Saginaw, Michigan and attended the Saginaw High School and the Ypsilanti State Normal School (now (Eastern Michigan University).
Maid continued to race for another six years for Doble, notably winning races in Buffalo, Sacramento and East Saginaw, Michigan against male contenders half her age.
Before his time with the Hoosiers, he had played professionally for the East Saginaw Grays of the Northwestern League in 1883.
