She got her training and studying on acting, voice acting, and improvisation in Second City Training Center, East West Players, Susan Blu Voiceover Workshop and UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television.

In September 2008, Cedar Grove OnStage worked in association with East West Players to produce the world premiere of Dan Kwong's Be Like Water, directed by Tashima, presented at the David Henry Hwang Theater at the Union Center for the Arts, in downtown Los Angeles' Little Tokyo.
Working with such companies in Los Angeles as Playwrights Arena at LATC, East West Players, South Coast Repertory, LoudRMouth, The Garage Theatre Company, to name a few.
Theaters where Gotanda's works have been produced include American Conservatory Theatre, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Campo Santo+Intersection, East West Players, Manhattan Theatre Club, Mark Taper Forum, Missouri Rep, New York Shakespeare Festival, Playwrights Horizons, Asian American Theater Company, Robey Theatre Company, San Jose Repertory Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, and South Coast Repertory.
This included Luis Valdez's El Teatro Campesino, the East-West Players and the Bilingual Foundation for the Arts, founded by Carmen Zapata.
