Hampshire Basin

The central part drains into the Solent (directly or via via Southampton Water), through the Lymington River, Test, Itchen, Meon, Hamble, Western Yar, Medina and Eastern Yar.

National Cycle Route 23

The route then slopes significantly downhill, until it is parallel with the course of a different river, the Eastern Yar.

Niton

The source of the Eastern Yar is in the parish, a little to the north of the village.

Whitwell, Isle of Wight

The Eastern Yar, originating in the north-east of the island, extends an infant tributary to Whitwell and at one point, a stone sheep wash is still present.

Yarbridge

The bridge over the River Yar, defended by a Second World War pillbox, was constructed in the Middle Ages by Sir Theobald Russell who was killed fighting a French invasion, dying of his wounds at Knighton Gorges.
