In 2002, a new Eastern span of the Bay Bridge began construction.
It had been known for over thirty years that a major earthquake on either of two nearby faults (the San Andreas and the Hayward) would destroy the major cantilever span.

Upon completion of the bridge, the entire falsework structure and all exposed underwater supports will be removed to make a safe channel for deep draft ships transiting to and from the Port of Oakland.
