Not all sapotes are members of this genus or even family, however; many sapotes are in the family Sapotaceae, especially the genus Pouteria, and the black sapote is part of the Ebenaceae.

Larva: The larva of laudabilis feeds on Diospyros candolleana (Ebenaceae), and is green with a vinaceous dorsal patch on each segment, enclosing a whitish dark-centred ocellus.
It was originally placed by H. Wydler in the family Ebenaceae and named for his teacher the Rev. Johann August Ephraim Goetze.
