In 2000 he conducted the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt am Main, with great success which was praised by the press.

Spanjaard studied at the Conservatorium van de Vereniging Muzieklyceum at Amsterdam and afterwards at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

Verhey has played with eminent conductors such as Mariss Jansons, Riccardo Chailly, Bernard Haitink, Hans Vonk, Ed Spanjaard, Edo de Waart, Neville Marriner, Klaus Tennstedt, Jean Fournet and with fellow violinists Yehudi Menuhin, David Oistrakh and Igor Oistrakh.
His works have been performed by soloists the likes of Ernest Rombout, Ananda Sukarlan, Miquel Bernat, Ángel Luis Castaño, Manuel Guillén, Evelyn Glennie and Sarah Leonard, and conducted by the likes of Ed Spanjaard, Sakari Oramo, Diego Masson, Luca Pfaff, José Ramón Encinar, Josep Pons, Pedro Halffter, Fabián Panisello, Tapio Tuomela, Pablo González Bernardo, Pablo Heras, Dmitri Loos, etc.
The decade 1987-1996 he developed a close relation and co-operation with the ever-memorable composer Costas P. Kydoniats and amongst others with conductors Arie van Beek, Jos van der Sijde, Jac van Steen, Ed Spanjaard, William Webb, Peter Stark, Wang Jin, Manuel Palau, Stuart Dunlop, George Hadjinikos, Andreas Paridis, Gustav Meier, Kenneth Keisler (New York 1995), Zubin Mehta (London 1997) etc.
