His most productive season came with the 1980 Giants, when he had a 9–10 mark with a 3.54 ERA in a pitching rotation that included Vida Blue (14–10), Ed Whitson (11–13) and Bob Knepper (9–16).
He made the start, after being escorted to the stadium by Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti and his security team.
On June 28, he was traded with Bill Madlock and Dave Roberts to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Fred Breining, Al Holland and Ed Whitson, but again was assigned to their triple A affiliate.
