Upon his reaching the age limit for an acting bishop, he became bishop emeritus and Pope Benedict XVI named William Mulvey bishop of Corpus Christi on 18 January 2010.

Besides serving in several diocesan positions, Carmody ministered with the Missionary Society of St. James the Apostle in 1984 overseas in Peru.
