Edsall was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-ninth and Thirtieth Congresses, serving in office from March 4, 1845 to March 3, 1849.
While serving on Philadelphia, Seaman Edsall went ashore with a landing party on 1 April 1899 to suppress hostile natives near Vailele, Samoa.
In 2009, Edsall was mentioned in Notre Dame's search for a new head football coach following the firing of Charlie Weis.
