Guided by Bishop and Regius Professor of Divinity Brooke Westcott and under the leadership of Rev. Edward Bickersteth the missionaries lived in a quasi-monastic community that came to be known as the Cambridge Brotherhood.
The church was designed by eminent Victorian architect John Norton, completed in 1896 and consecrated on 17 June 1897 by Edward Bickersteth, the Bishop of Exeter.
