He ranked fourth in a graduating class that included future fellow Civil War generals Halleck, Canby, Hunt, and Ord.
In 1849, after Los Angeles was ordered by California's military governor to conduct a survey, but couldn't pay for the work, Temple paid for the Ord Survey out of his own funds, and then was repaid by the sale of lots created in the survey.

John Bigelow, Jr. whose diplomat father John Bigelow was a close friend with Ord's father General Otho Cresap Ord. John Bigelow had once dated Ord's elder sister Roberta (Bertie) and despite encouragements from both families the relationship waned.
The Southern Pacific Railroad named a station along its now-abandoned Colusa branch, along the west bank of the Sacramento River, Ord Bend as recognition of the nearby Ord Ranch, owned in the 1850s by U.S. Army MG Edward O.C. Ord and two of his brothers.
In partnership with John Augustus Sutter, Jr. and with William Tecumseh Sherman and Edward Ord as surveyors, Brannan laid out the unofficial subdivisions that became the city of Sacramento.
His diaries and drawings record his travel west via Panama and his six years in California, including a surveying expedition to Los Angeles in June 1849 with Lieutenant Edward O.C. Ord.
