1847: Chief Superintendent Egerton Ryerson returns from a tour of European education systems and submits his "Report on a System of Public Elementary Instruction in Upper Canada".
Governor General Sir Charles Metcalfe asked him to become Chief Superintendent of Education for Upper Canada in 1844.
