About 190 liters of dimethyl methylphosphonate, together with other chemicals, were released during the El Al Flight 1862 crash at Bijlmer, Amsterdam.
Following the Bijlmer disaster he picked up the nickname Bijlmerboy, due to his vociferous insistence on a full parliamentary inquiry into the aftereffects of the crash.

In 1992 the Bijlmermeer was struck by disaster as an Israeli El Al airplane El Al Flight 1862 crashed into the blocks called Groeneveen en Kruitberg, in the very heart of the Bijlmermeer.
