A native of Charlotte Amalie, United States Virgin Islands, Hendricks was a superior defensive catcher and a very fine handler of pitchers on a usually strong Baltimore Orioles rotation that included Mike Cuellar, Pat Dobson, Dave McNally, Jim Palmer and Tom Phoebus.
On June 15, 1976, he was part of a blockbuster trade in which he, Doyle Alexander, Elrod Hendricks, Ken Holtzman and Grant Jackson went to the New York Yankees for Rick Dempsey, Tippy Martinez, Rudy May, Scott McGregor and Dave Pagan.
