Its wood is light pink in color, and being very soft but durable, is used for spoons, kitchen vessels and another craft articles.
Trees from Tierra del Fuego: Drimys winteri, Maytenus magellanica, Embothrium coccineum, Nothofagus antarctica, Nothofagus pumilio, and Nothofagus betuloides, have thrived too, in this cold oceanic climate.
Despite the occasionally extreme privations, and accompanied only by a boy guide, Comber sent back seeds and herbarium specimens of over 1200 species, including the Chilean Fire Bush, Nothofagus antarctica, and several species of Berberis and Eucryphia.
It also contains various rare trees of interest, including Caucasian Spruce, Brewer's Spruce, Chilean fire tree (Embothrium coccineum), and Eucryphia glutinosa.
