The poem describes a medieval tomb that can be found in Chichester Cathedral; the tomb is of Richard FitzAlan, 10th Earl of Arundel (d. 1376), and his second wife, Eleanor of Lancaster (d. 1372), with their dogs at their feet.
In the north aisle are monuments to Sir William Wray (d. 1617) and his wife Frances (d. 1647), and to Susanna Drury, sister of Frances.
The parish church, dedicated to Saint Vedast, also houses The Hamby Monument, a wall monument originally constructed around 1620, and later restored by their descendants, the Chaplin family.
The church contains a number of fine monuments, including the "purest Renaissance monument of the mid-16th century" to Sir Robert Dormer (died 1552), and a wall monument attributed to Louis-François Roubiliac.
