Already for several years he is the second highest rated Latvian tennis player in the ATP ranking behind Ernests Gulbis.
Ernests Gulbis was the defending champion but decided to participate in the 2011 Dubai Tennis Championships instead.
Last year's champion Ernests Gulbis did not play in the Farmers Classic, but chose to compete in Kitzbühel this year.
