The brother of hockey player Ernie Hicke, he was a member of the AHL First All-Star Team in 1959, recipient of the Dudley 'Red' Garrett Memorial Trophy Award for Top Rookie in the AHL in 1959, recipient of the John B. Sollenberger Trophy for Top Scorer in the AHL in 1959, recipient of the Les Cunningham Award for MVP in the AHL with Rudy Migay in 1959, and in 1959, 1960, and 1969, he played in the NHL All-Star Game.
