In March 2013 the portrait of a man wearing a white feathered bonnet was re-attributed to Rembrandt by the Rembrandt expert Ernst van de Wetering.
He has also written several academic papers debunking the myth that Claude Monet painted only with natural light.
In the fifth volume of the Corpus (2011), which covers "small history paintings," the painting is discussed by the current director of the RRP, Ernst van de Wetering, in terms that clearly imply Rembrandt's authorship.
On 18 March 2013 it was re-attributed to the master by Ernst van de Wetering.

More recent opinion has shifted even more decisively in favor of the Frick, with Simon Schama in his 1999 book Rembrandt's Eyes, and a Rembrandt Project scholar, Ernst van de Wetering (Melbourne Symposium, 1997) both arguing for attribution to the master.
