The mosque is named after Ertuğrul Gazi, the father of the founder of the Ottoman Empire, Osman I, as a commendation to him.

He inherited this title from his father Ertugrul, who inherited it from his father Suleyman Shah, who inherited it from his father Kayaalp, this going back to when the Kayihan were a roving tribe of Oghuz nomads who inhabited the area surrounding Mount Khan Tengri.
The commander of Paris II, Henri Rollin, taken prisoner by Ertuğrul's unit after his ship's sinking, had also presented a detailed official report on Paris II and Alexandra at the end of the war in 1918.
