Presented by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, Baybeats was launched in 2002 primarily to create a platform to showcase indie-rock musicians in Asia, especially local musicians, and to expose Singapore audiences to quality acts in the genre as well as to develop the industry.
He also added that the stations will connect commuters to the "doorsteps of major cultural destinations" like the Esplanade and Fort Canning.

On March 11, 2005, as part of the inaugural Mosaic Music Festival, he performed at the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay in Singapore, with his international trio of Shawn Kelley and Belinda Moody, Singaporean singers Claressa Monteiro, Jacintha Abisheganaden, Anne Weerapass and Rani Singam, together with jazz legend James Moody, in a concert to commemorate Moody's 80th birthday.
Launched by the Esplanade in 2005, the festival has since garnered good reviews in regional newspapers such as Thailand's The Nation, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post and Malaysia's The Star.
