5 unusual facts about Etang

Berre

Berre-l'Étang, a commune in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in southern France

Pierre Dupont de l'Étang

Dupont fell into the emperor's disgrace, as it was not taken into account that his troops were for the most part raw levies, and that ill-luck contributed materially to the catastrophe.

Pursued and cut off by a Spanish army under the Duke of Castaños, his corps was defeated in the Battle of Bailén after his Swiss troops deserted and returned to their former allegiance.

Dupont's series of duels fought against Fournier-Sarlovèze formed the basis for a Conrad short story which was adapted in turn by Ridley Scott in his first feature film as director, The Duellists in 1977.

The Duellists

Their names were Dupont and Fournier-Sarlovèze, whom Conrad disguised slightly, changing Dupont into d'Hubert and Fournier into Féraud.

Château de Montbillon

The domaine de Montbillon (the lands, now a large farm, of which the château was the centre) also included the Étang du lion ("Lion's Pond") now in the commune of Rocles.

Grand Etang Lake

Grand Etang Lake is represented on the base of the Coat of arms of Grenada.

Jacques-Nicolas Gobert

He set out from Madrid with a division on 2 July 1808 to join General Dupont in Jaén.

Jean-Guillaume, baron Hyde de Neuville

Under Louis Philippe, he lived quietly upon his estate of l'Étang, near Sancerre, but in 1837 he took an active part in the discussion of a new treaty of commerce with the United States, and caused several pamphlets to be printed on the subject.
