His potential was proven to be great in the 1991 Cadet's Eurobasket where Alvertis led, alongside with Panagiotis Liadelis, the Greek team to the silver medal.
His first national coaching tenure (which lasted three years) saw two Eurobasket appearances (1985, 1987) and Israel's historic 7th placing at the 1986 FIBA World Basketball Championship.
