This question was proposed by Fermat, as a challenge to Evangelista Torricelli.
In the next year he was following the lines of Torricelli and Robert Boyle; and, dedicating the resulting work to Sir Justinian Isham, he brought it out in 1662 as Tractatus de Restitutione Corporum, which replied to Francis Line.
On 27 April 1661, they used a barometer, of the type invented by Evangelista Torricelli in 1643, to measure the pressure of air at different altitudes on Pendle Hill in Lancashire.
