The orchestra became increasingly popular, Bilse toured Europe and gave guest concerts in Saint Petersburg, Riga, Warsaw, Amsterdam, Vienna, as well as at the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris, where his band performed The Blue Danube together with Johann Strauss II.
His efforts paid off in 1876 when he won a medal and certificate "for fine Merino ram wool" at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia and in 1878 when he won recognition for his wool at the Exposition Universelle in Paris.
The firm flourished and their products won a first Council medal at the The Great Exhibition of 1851 and a Medaille d'honneur at the Exposition Universelle of 1855.

In 1867 the company's grand organ built for the Basilica of St. Epvre in Nancy received a Gold Medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris and Merklin was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur.
In this capacity he represented Denmark on the exhibition committees for a number of large exhibitions, including the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 and the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900.
He won the silver medal for painting at the Exposition Universelle in 1889, and in the same year founded the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts along with Meissonier, Puvis de Chavannes, Rodin, Carolus-Duran and Charles Cottet.
