The title of the book, like Milton's poem, recalls the biblical story of Samson, who was captured by the Philistines, his eyes burned out, and taken to Gaza, where he was forced to work grinding grain in a mill.

New A&R head Mike Alway had promoted the Snoopy's venue in Richmond and been involved with the Scissor Fits, and would sign a clutch of groups (The Monochrome Set, Everything But The Girl, Eyeless in Gaza, Felt, Five Or Six, etc.
His best known work includes Spindoe (1968), the controversial Big Breadwinner Hog (1969) and many adaptations, including M.R. James' Lost Hearts, Jane Eyre, Eyeless in Gaza and a considerable number of screenplays on Roald Dahl's short stories for Tales of the Unexpected.
