One year later he won the FA Amateur Cup with Clapton F.C. In the final against Eston United his team won 6-0 and Purnell scored once.
Cockfield Football Club was an association football team from the village of Cockfield, County Durham in the north of England which was dubbed the "Village Wonder Team" in the 1920s after achieving success in the national FA Amateur Cup.
He also won a Blue at football, and went on to win an England amateur cap and an FA Amateur Cup winner’s medal in 1953 playing for Pegasus.
He officiated at the 1954 FA Amateur Cup Final at Wembley between Bishop Auckland and Crook Town and has also refereed four international matches.
