The club was founded 1 June 1899 and soon merged with VfB 1899 Lehe to become FC Bremerhaven-Lehe which was represented at the founding of the German Football Association at Leipzig in 1900.
He began his career at Regionalliga North side TuS Bremerhaven 93 but quickly moved to the Bundesliga, playing the rest of his career at just two clubs: Werder Bremen and VfB Stuttgart as a defender.
