It was first produced in July 1991 in New York City, and was first produced in Canada at the Factory Theatre in February 1992.
First staged at the Factory Theatre in Toronto, MacDonald lightly revised the play for publication, at which point it was staged at Theatre Kingston in Kingston, Ontario.
In 2011, director Ken Gass mounted a production of The Rez Sisters at Toronto's Factory Theatre.
