Before he became the coach of the Kosovo national football team, Edmond Rugova was a famous football player in Kosovo playing for KF Prishtina during the 1980s as part of the so-called "Golden Generation" of Kosovar football players that included Fadil Vokrri, Agim Cana, Fadil Muriqi and others.
In the following season he moved to another Croatian Australian club, Canberra FC where he played for two season before joining the Albanian club of South Dandenong (Dandenong Thunder) helping them to get promoted up to Victorian State League Division 1.

He played in an illustrious line-up, that included the likes of Agim Cana, Edmond Rugova and Fadil Muriqi and many famous Kosovan players that were part of the Golden Generation in the 1980s.
