The appointment of Ayyoub as Chief of the General Staff was a result of Fahd Jassem al-Freij promotion to the post of Defense Minister and Deputy Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, in the wake of the 2012 Damascus bombing.

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, to a family of immigrants from Sweden, "Freij" has four children, his second marriage being to an Iranian-Assyrian scholar, Dr Eden Naby, from Urmia, Iran who teaches at Columbia University.
Based at Shenstone, in Lichfield, Staffordshire, it is the UK operations arm of Dubai-based Freij Entertainment International.
