Home to Sherburn-in-Elmet Airfield which is currently the base for the Sherburn Aero Club, Sherburn's links with the air industry go back to the Second World War when the Blackburn Aircraft Company built the Fairey Swordfish in the town.
These range from real world aircraft (such as the Fairey Swordfish), to prototypes that never saw actual flight (e.g. the Kyūshū J7W), to completely fictional ones.
Mecha designer Kimitoshi Yamane liked the English biplane torpedo-bomber Fairey Swordfish; Yamane’s preferences lead to the naming of Spike Spiegel’s ship: the Swordfish II.
