7 unusual facts about False Bay


Dark Tide

Production began in July 2010 in False Bay, Cape Town, South Africa, and shot for six weeks on a small boat with real great white sharks.

False Bay

Devil's Peak, Table Mountain, Lion's Head and Signal Hill form an amphitheatre along the western edge of the Cape Flats.

Despite this, swimming, surfing, yachting, scuba diving and so on are popular pastimes around the bay, at centres such as Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Smitswinkel Bay, Strand and Gordon's Bay.

Kogelberg

The Kogelberg is a range of mountains along the False Bay coast in the Western Cape of South Africa.

Saldanha catshark

The Saldanha catshark (Apristurus saldanha) is a species of catshark, family Scyliorhinidae, found from Cape Columbine to south of False Bay in South Africa, between latitudes 31° S and 40° S.

Samson Dyer

Arrived in Cape Town, he was employed by the firm Cloete, Reitz and Anderson as a harpooner for the whaling industry in False Bay.

Western Cape Water Supply System

The largest component of the WCWSS is the Riviersonderend Government Water Scheme, which is a large inter-basin water transfer scheme that regulates the flow of the Sonderend River flowing South towards the Indian Ocean, the Berg River flowing North towards the Atlantic Ocean and Eerste River that flows into False Bay.


Helderberg Mountain

The Helderberg Nature Reserve is situated on the slopes of the beautiful Helderberg Mountain overlooking the town of Somerset West and False Bay.

Soft coral nudibranch

This species has so far been found only off South Africa, from False Bay to Port Elizabeth, intertidally to 14 m.

This has taken place mainly on False Bay from the naval base at Simon's Town, but there have also been regular outings to bodies of water elsewhere in the region, including the Berg and Breede Rivers, Langebaan and Hermanus lagoons, and the Atlantic ocean in the vicinity of Cape Point.
