The French were in the process of funding the new Panama Canal Company under Comte Ferdinand de Lesseps.
Tollygunge is named after Major William Tolly, the Ferdinand de Lesseps of Calcutta, who in 1775-76 started a project to excavate and dredge the Tolly's Nullah (Adi Ganga) (also named for him) as a passage for the people of East Bengal and Assam to Calcutta.

1869 : Napoleon III invited the Emperor Franz Joseph I to the opening of the Suez Canal (planned by Austrian Engineer Alois Negrelli and built by French Ferdinand de Lesseps).
This was the original basis of Lesseps’ great undertaking (in 1869 Lesseps greeted him in Paris as the “father “ of the canal); and in 1831 he introduced to the home government the idea of opening a new overland route to India, by a daring and adventurous journey along the Euphrates valley from Anah to the Persian Gulf.
The new body was welcomed throughout Europe (contributions were sent by the Rothschilds and Viscount Ferdinand de Lesseps) and the national committees were to be headed by grand dukes, princes, and other royals, but most of them never got off the ground.
The International Commission for the piercing of the isthmus of Suez (Commission Internationale pour le percement de l'isthme des Suez) was the commission consisting of various European experts convened in 1855 by Ferdinand de Lesseps as instructed by the viceroy of Egypt Muhammad Sa'id in order to ascertain the feasibility of a canal between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea and to evaluate the best alternative for such a canal.
Her courtesy title comes from her previous marriage to French nobleman Count Alexandre de Lesseps, a descendant of Ferdinand de Lesseps, the architect of the Suez Canal.
It's named after Ferdinand de Lesseps, who was a consul in Barcelona and intervened against the 1842 bombing of the city ordered by General Baldomero Espartero and Captain-General Juan Van Halen.
